Johns Hopkins University Center for Technology in Education Selects Sensics Virtual Reality System for Educational Gaming and Simulations Project
CTE will investigate the educational impact of virtual reality, and its potential applications for special-needs students
Baltimore, Md. - Oct 17th, 2006 - Sensics, the panoramic virtual reality (VR) display company, announced today that its piSight 150 panoramic head-mounted display has been selected by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Technology in Education (CTE) for use in its work on educational gaming and simulations. The selection has been made part of a grant written in collaboration with Maryland Public Television (MPT) and awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.
The project will include a focus on how educational games and simulations can positively impact the math and reading performance of middle school students. The specific work carried out by CTE focuses heavily on emerging technologies, with a particular concentration on how VR can be applied to engage the ‘digital natives’ attending today’s and tomorrows K-12 schools.
"We recognize that Maryland's future in technology — its technology dominance — depends on the efforts of its people and the intellectual and creative energy of its business and academic communities," said Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. "We are very proud that Sensics has been recognized for its innovative and cutting edge research and technology. This program will be an outstanding resource for assisting our middle school students with their math and reading performances."
“We are working closely with the Sensics experts to explore the educational potential of their cutting edge technology." says Jacqueline Nunn, Ed. D. Director of Johns Hopkins CTE. “In accordance with CTE’s mission, we are also interested in exploring how VR might be used to reach students with special needs and perhaps provide experiences and opportunities that were previously unavailable to them."
"We are very pleased to partner with CTE in this extremely innovative approach which uses our leading VR technology to create exciting learning experiences for Maryland’s middle school students." says Yuval Boger, Chief Executive Officer of Sensics. "We anticipate that the experience will be so immersive and compelling that students will remain enthusiastically engaged throughout the learning process."
